Afgelopen week werd The Game Awards gehouden. De show is altijd wel een feestje voor zowel alle aanwezigen, kijkers live, games die worden voorzien van awards en de studio’s die met nieuwe game-onthullingen komen. Echter was er dit jaar veel kritiek, want het team achter de organisatie besloot om toespraken van ontwikkelaars die een prijs wonnen, op maximaal 30 seconden te houden.
Dit zorgde voor veel frustratie op sociale media en heel veel kritiek op presentator Geoff Keighley die Hideo Kojima minuten lang op het podium hield, maar CEO Swen Vincke van de Belgische studio larian, kreeg maar 30 seconden de tijd om een speech te houden voor het winnen van de beste game van het jaar 2023 met Baldur’s Gate 3. Na twee zinnen, begon op de achtergrond al muziek te draaien van we moeten verder en op de teleprompter stond ineens het bericht van “Please wrap it up” met een timer.
Swen Vincke heeft daarom nu besloten om de speech die hij wilde doen, maar daar niet de tijd voor kreeg, online te posten.
Volledige Baldur’s Gate 3 wint game van het jaar speech van Larian CEO Swen Vincke:
“I want to thank Geoff Keighley and the people that organized The Game Awards for creating an award show so big that it gets mainstream attention. While 30 secs is a bit short, there’s nothing like the game awards and it’s an incredible achievement.”
“Over 2000 people are listed in the credits and since I can’t call out everyone, I want to focus on a group of people that don’t always get the credit they deserve. Team QA, team localisation, team customer support, team operations, team publishing, team play testers, and every other developer at Larian, BG3 wouldn’t exist without you and you all deserve to be very proud of this.”
“I want to end with a story of a conversation I had a long time ago with a publisher. He told me, luckily for them, games are driven by idealism. He meant it in an exploitative way but he was right. Games are a unique art form, as important as books, music or movies. Many developers, myself included, make games because they love seeing others engage with their creations in a way only games can offer.
“They don’t care that much about the money made beyond it being the fuel they need to create new and better games. It’s worth reminding everyone that fuel is but a means, not a goal. Whereto and how we journey are what matter and what we remember.
“Thanks you.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is nu beschikbaar op de PC via Steam. Sinds 6 september 2023 is de game ook verkrijgbaar op de PlayStation 5 en sinds 7 december 2023 is de game ook verkrijgbaar op de Xbox Series S en Xbox Series X. De Xbox-versie is gelijk uitgebracht met alle patches en hotfixes.
